These armchairs are a refined example of the historicist taste of the late 19th and early 20th century, inspired by the neoclassical models promoted by the royal workshops during the reign of Ferdinand VII. The structure, of straight lines and sober elegance, is enriched with a sculptural ornamentation of imperial character: the armrests culminate in golden winged figures, while the fluted legs and the reliefs of acanthus leaves evoke the severe monumentality of court furniture. The combination of polished wood with gilt and satin blue upholstery underscores the intention of recovering the nobility and decorum of Fernandine palace furniture, reinterpreted here with the virtuoso craftsmanship characteristic of royal workshops.
These armchairs exude timeless solemnity, full of references to the classical world, but freely reinvented. This is a piece of furniture with late neoclassical roots. During the reign of Ferdinand VII, the stylistic legacy of the First French Empire was perpetuated, balancing Greco-Roman, neoclassical and Egyptian influences. The Fernandine style is the one developed in the decorative arts -especially furniture- in Spain during the reign of Ferdinand VII (1814-1833). It succeeded the Empire style and preceded the Elizabethan style.
