DESCRIPTION

Art Deco ceiling lamp. France, 1940s.
Black and gold patinated bronze.
6 arms, 24 lights.
Measurements: 130 x 70 x 70 cm.

Ceiling lamp made of patinated bronze. The central body adopts a globular form from which depart multiple curved arms destined to support the lights. The decoration combines black patinated bronze surfaces with gilded vegetal and ornamental applications. In the upper area, the figure of a satyr playing the aulos, in a dynamic attitude, stands out.
The work stands out for the fusion between functionality and sculpture, one of the most characteristic features of French Art Deco. The inclusion of a male figure of classical inspiration, treated in a stylized and dynamic way, refers to the persistence of the ideal of Greco-Latin beauty reinterpreted under the modern parameters of the movement: clean lines, clear volumes and a marked formal expressiveness.
The contrast between the black patinated bronze and the gilded elements reinforces the visual interplay between sobriety and luxury, an essential pairing in the Deco language. The gilded vegetal applications and the careful symmetry of the arms bring balance and rhythm to the design, demonstrating a high technical level and a unitary conception of the object.
In the historical context, these lamps were intended for representative interiors, halls, lobbies or institutional spaces and responded to the desire to maintain an elegant decorative language even in a period of uncertainty marked by World War II and the immediate post-war period. Thus, the piece can be understood as a testimony to the survival of Art Deco in France, as well as the ability of the decorative arts to adapt and survive the social and aesthetic changes of its time.
