DESCRIPTION
Trumeau mirror Louis XV style, nineteenth century.
Scene painted in oil on canvas; glass mirror and painted and gilded wood.
Measurements: 125 x 47 cm.
Rectangular mirror thin in its width arranged in two areas thanks to moldings that frame both parts and in which are presented scrolls and plant elements whose lines are slightly reminiscent of the Rococo of the eighteenth century at the top. Above, a country scene painted in oil shows a very idealized nature and figures with a clear classicist influence, as usual in the art of the 19th century, and a certain reminiscence in its subject matter of the "fêtes galantes" of Rococo. The lower part is the one with the glass mirror, and the molding on it is rather simpler than on the upper part.
The trumeau mirror originated in 18th century France, and owes its name to the place for which it was intended, the space between two windows. This situation multiplied the light in the room, both because of the reflections of the mirrored surface and because of the gilded carvings that used to decorate the frames, which shone under the light. This type of mirror is usually rectangular, and usually includes an upper ornamental area, higher than the mirror surface.
