DESCRIPTION
Pair of Louis XVI-style wall sconces; France, 1950.
Gilded bronze.
Measurements: 40 x 24 x 12 cm (x2).
A pair of mid-20th-century French wall sconces whose aesthetic represents a reinterpretation of the Louis XVI style, one of the most representative decorative styles of European Neoclassicism. Crafted in gilded bronze, they feature a symmetrical composition of two light arms, enriched with a classically inspired ornamental repertoire that reflects a taste for harmony, proportion, and decorative restraint. The design incorporates elements characteristic of the Louis XVI style, such as fluted columns, hanging garlands, laurel leaves, and a flaming urn-shaped finial—motifs inspired by the architecture and art of Classical Antiquity. In contrast to the exuberance of the preceding Rococo style, this style emphasizes straight lines, compositional balance, and carefully restrained ornamentation—qualities that are clearly evident in these pieces.
Although crafted around 1950, these wall sconces follow the French tradition of recreating historical designs with exceptional craftsmanship. Throughout the 20th century, especially after World War II, numerous specialized workshops continued to produce lighting fixtures and furniture inspired by the great French decorative styles of the 18th century, intended for both private residences and prestigious interior design projects.
