DESCRIPTION

Attributed to GABRIEL VIARDOT (France, 1830–1906); late 19th century.
Orientalist display cabinet.
Wood and gilded bronze mounts with mother-of-pearl inlay.
Measurements: 150 x 60 x 40 cm.
The design of this display cabinet reflects the rise of Orientalism in French decorative arts during the second half of the 19th century, a period in which the discovery of and fascination with Asian arts profoundly transformed European taste. Rather than faithfully reproducing Eastern models, Parisian cabinetmakers developed their own stylistic language in which French artisanal tradition merged with forms, materials, and motifs inspired by China and Japan, giving rise to some of the most sophisticated creations of international historicism. The furniture’s architecture reflects a scenographic conception clearly inspired by the East. The interior is organized through a complex succession of shelves, niches, and different levels, deliberately breaking with strict Western classical symmetry.
Aesthetically, the piece is reminiscent of the designs developed by Gabriel Viardot, one of the leading figures of French Japonism. Beginning in the 1860s, following the impact of Eastern arts at the 1867 Paris World’s Fair, Viardot specialized in creating Chinese- and Japanese-inspired furniture, characterized by a combination of refined carvings, lacquered panels imported from China and Japan, mother-of-pearl inlays, and rich gilded bronzes designed by himself. His works achieved great international recognition, winning numerous medals at the World’s Fairs of 1867, 1878, 1889, and 1900, as well as the gold medal at the 1885 Antwerp World’s Fair. The success of his workshop earned him the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1885, establishing him as one of the most prestigious cabinetmakers in late-19th-century France.
