DESCRIPTION
Pair of Ionic columns, 17th century
Carved, gilded, and polychrome wood.
They show signs of wear, loss of gilding and polychrome paint, scuffs, and minor damage.
Measurements: 48.5 × 8 × 8 cm each.
Both columns feature fluted shafts resting on molded bases and capitals defined by lateral volutes and ovate motifs. Their design as a pair and the richness of the gilded finish suggest that they were part of an ornamental structure of a religious or architectural nature, possibly an altarpiece, an altar, or a decorative frame.
The polychrome painting, partially preserved beneath the gilding, adds depth to the carving and allows one to appreciate the historical layering of finishes. Their slender form and the fact that they are preserved together enhance their appeal as independent decorative elements.
