DESCRIPTION
Pair of Ionic columns, 17th century
Carved, gilded, and polychromed wood.
They show signs of wear, loss of gilding and polychrome paint, minor chips, and signs of use.
Measurements: 48 × 8.5 × 8 cm each.
Designed as ornamental architectural elements, both columns feature fluted shafts, molded bases, and Ionic capitals defined by their characteristic volutes. The combination of carving, gilding, and traces of polychromy suggests they were likely part of an altarpiece, a domestic altar, or a decorative structure inspired by classical styles.
The stylization of the shafts and the simplified treatment of the capitals reflect the enduring influence of the classical repertoire in the decorative arts of the 19th and 20th centuries. Their joint preservation reinforces their significance as a pair, suitable both for functional restoration and for independent display.
