DESCRIPTION

Globe; CHARLES DIEN (France, 1809 -1870), 1840- 1850.
Ebonized wood base.
Signed and dated.
Measurements: 38 x 24 x 24 cm.
Terrestrial globe raised on a wooden base, with an axis that allows the globe to rotate in metal. The terrestrial sphere presents political and geographical indications, as well as the representation of parallels and meridians. The globe is the only geographical representation that does not suffer distortion. They are usually mounted, as we see here, on an angled support, which facilitates their use by representing at the same time the angle of the planet with respect to the sun and its own rotation. This makes it easy to visualize how the days and seasons change.
Charles Jr. Dien was an astronomer and cosmographer at the Paris Observatory, he contributed to perfecting the construction of globes and spheres, of which he made some examples. He collaborated with Felix Delamarche, for whom he directed the Maison Delamarche. He is also the author of successful printed works on the use of globes and spheres.
He is not to be confused with his father, his namesake, Charles Dien, who also worked for Maison Delamarche as an engraver.
