DESCRIPTION

Pair of wine coolers after a design by ROBERT ADAM (England, 1728-1792) for SEFFERIN NELSON. England, George III style, 19th century.
Mahogany wood with bronze applications.
Measurements: 49,5 x 65 x 44 cm.

This pair of wine coolers is based on a design by Robert Adam (architect, interior designer and also furniture designer son of the prolific architect William Adam, from whom he learned his craft) for Goldsborough Hall, North Yorkshire, a stately mansion, originally built for Sir Richard Hutton in the late 16th century. The original wine coolers were made by cabinetmaker Sefferin Nelson around 1772-74. Both feature an oval mahogany frame with ormolu saddle, in the style of George III. The body is embellished with garlands, festoons, moldings and vegetal fretwork. Two bronze masks act as handles and take the form of the face of an imposing lion.
