DESCRIPTION

Armstrong cannon miniature; England, second half of the 19th century. XIX
Bone and wood
Measurements: 13 x 30 x 10 cm.

This type of cannon was used, both on board ships and on land, to fire salvos, to warn of danger or to call attention in case of emergency. They were also used to start yacht races. These miniature pieces were popular in the East Indies from the 16th century onwards, where they were mounted on small boats and were also considered a form of currency. They were not only intended as weapons, but were also prized for their beauty.

Armstrong guns became the most widely used artillery pieces on warships in much of the world during the second half of the 19th century. They were designed by British industrialist Sir William Armstrong.
