A refined coffee and tea set by Christofle, dated late 19th century, made of silver plated metal and crafted in the Japanese style that was so successful in fin-de-siècle France. The influence of Japanese aesthetics can be clearly seen in the handles and grips, as they imitate the texture of bamboo, while the deposits of the pieces and the field of the tray have engravings of oriental plant inspiration, highlighting motifs of peonies. The set is composed of seven pieces: a tray, coffee pot, teapot, samovar, milk jug, sugar bowl and compote bowl.
The presence of engraved initials suggests that this was a personalized commission for a wealthy family.
Christofle was founded in 1830, when jeweler Charles Christofle took over the management of a jewelry workshop belonging to his wife's family. Christofle's product lines include silver frames, crystal vases and glassware, porcelain tableware and silver jewelry. The manufacture of Christofle pieces uses traditional manufacturing techniques, including hammer work, yarn stamping, carving and engraving for finishing, as well as patinas, enamels, cloisonné and lacquering for colors, forging of cutlery.
