DESCRIPTION
Set of two Napoleon III sconces; ca. 1870.
Gilded bronze.
Measurements: 57 x 34 cm (x2).
This set of two wall sconces of two lights each, dated ca. 1870, is a representative example of the decorative taste under the Second French Empire, during the reign of Napoleon III. Executed in gilded bronze with remarkable technical virtuosity, the sconces show mythological figures, possibly fauns or satyrs, that emerge with dynamism from the mural support, extending their arms to hold the branches that culminate in the candle holders. The ornamental richness, the sinuous movement of the forms and the profusion of vegetal and rockery motifs place these pieces within the style known as "Rococo revival", a historicist reinterpretation of the French taste of the 18th century.
In the context of the Second Empire (1852-1870), interior decoration became an essential means of affirming the social status and cultural refinement of the emerging bourgeoisie and imperial aristocracy. A return to the decorative splendor of the past was promoted, especially the Rococo style. The interiors of the great Parisian hôtels particuliers and palatial residences were populated with richly carved furniture, tapestries, artistic bronzes and sumptuous objects such as these sconces.
