DESCRIPTION

Pair of mirrors cornucopia style Carlos III, 1770.
Carved and gilded wood.
Glass.
Original moons preserved.
Measurements: 114 x 62 x 20 cm (frame).
Pair of large rococo style cornucopias, made in the 19th century within the context of historicism. They have a carved, fretworked and gilded wood structure. The cornucopias were rich mirrors to which were added supports for candles (which usually disappears in the 19th century examples), so that the light from the candles would be multiplied by being reflected on their surface. They were especially used in the Baroque period, during the 17th century and most of the 18th century. They were an essential ornament in the great halls of representation that, following the typical theatricality of the Baroque, were full of mirrors and candelabras that produced visual games of all kinds, in addition to enriching the room. Since they were pieces of furniture of representation, they were made of richly carved and gilded wood, decorating their frames with a multitude of delicate motifs in relief, worked as if they were sculptures. The cornucopias, like the rest of the mirrors of the Baroque period, could have frames of different shapes and profiles, but never exceeded the inner profile that delimits the glass, unlike the examples of the Rococo period.
