DESCRIPTION
Pair of French Louis XVI candlesticks, mid-nineteenth century.
Bronze and crystal.
Presents very slight flaking.
Measurements: 30 x 8 x 8 cm.
Pair of Louis XVI style candlesticks, of great neoclassical elegance. Made in gilded bronze and cut crystal. The shafts are formed by the figure of a putto or little love in gilded bronze. These infantile figures, inspired by classical art, are a recurring motif in the Louis XVI style. Their modeling is delicate and detailed, showing the anatomy and curly hair. The putto, standing on the crystal base, holds with his raised arms the cut crystal arendela on which the tulip sits. The tulip is finely chiseled with bunches of grapes and vine leaves.
Each candlestick has a symmetrical and balanced structure, supported on a square bronze base that provides stability. Above this, a crystal plinth is carved with geometric patterns, a very popular design at the time that enhances the brightness and reflections of the light.
