This gothic torch rack is a remarkable example of medieval wrought iron used to illuminate religious or stately spaces.
Made entirely of wrought iron, it presents a slender and vertical structure, organized around a central helicoidal shaft, a technical and decorative resource characteristic of Gothic wrought ironwork, which provides visual dynamism and reinforces the strength of the metal.
The tripodal base, with arched legs, guarantees the stability of the piece and corresponds to models widely used in Europe during the late Middle Ages. The curved braces linking the shaft to the upper crossbeam, adorned with stylized leaves, introduce a delicate balance between function and ornamentation.
This type of torchiere fulfilled both a practical and symbolic function, contributing to the ceremonial illumination of churches, cloisters or great halls, and reflecting the high degree of mastery achieved by Gothic blacksmiths in the work of iron, a humble material elevated here to a form of authentic artistic expression.
