DESCRIPTION

Pair of iceboxes; Possibly Germany, late nineteenth century.
Silver plated metal.
They have punches on the base.
measurements: 26 x 28 x 28 x 28 cm.
Pair of ice buckets that is an example of the European decorative arts of the period, when the culture of the table and service reached a high degree of sophistication. Made of silver-plated metal, they have a convex body that narrows towards the base, topped by a wavy rim with a dynamic profile. The side handles, with their sinuous and volumetric outline, and the decoration applied in relief - with cartouches, scrolls and vegetal motifs - clearly refer to the historicist repertoire, in particular to a late reinterpretation of rococo, much appreciated in Central European production at the end of the 19th century.
In their historical context, these ice buckets are inserted in a moment of boom of the European bourgeoisie, particularly in Germany and nearby areas, where the production of tableware combined industrial techniques with handcrafted finishes. Their design responds to an eclectic taste, recovering styles of the past to satisfy the expectations of elegance and social prestige.
