DESCRIPTION
Monumental tabletop candlestick. Dutch Colonial, Batavia (Indonesia), 18th century.
Bronze.
Measurements: 48 × 26 cm.
This monumental tabletop candlestick is a piece of great rarity and exceptional presence, representative of the luxury and material sophistication of the Dutch colonial environment of the 18th century, specifically of Batavia (present-day Jakarta), one of the most important commercial centers of the Dutch Empire in Asia.
Made of solid bronze, it stands out for its monumental proportions, unusual for a tabletop object, and for the elegance of its turned profile, of clear European influence, adapted to the tastes and scale of high-ranking colonial interiors. This type of candlestick was intended for official residences, homes of high officials of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) or ceremonial spaces, where illumination was also a sign of power and status.
The solidity of the material, the quality of the casting and the historical patina give the piece a strong sculptural character, closer to an object of representation than a simple functional utensil. Its conservation and size place it in a museum level, being very few comparable examples on the market.
Overall, it is a highly collectible object, of great interest for collections of decorative arts, colonial art or history of international trade, where historical value, material quality and an imposing aesthetic presence come together.
