DESCRIPTION
Frame; Spain or France, early 18th century.
Carved and gilded wood.
Measurements: 73 x 61 cm; 85 x 73,5 cm (frame).
This frame is an example of the decorative taste typical of the transition between the late Baroque and the beginnings of Rococo. Carved in wood and later gilded, it presents a rich and meticulous ornamentation that runs around its entire perimeter. The surface is worked with vegetal reliefs and repetitive geometric motifs that generate an elegant and balanced visual rhythm. The gilding, probably applied with the traditional technique of gold leaf on plaster and bowl preparation, brings luminosity and a sumptuous effect that intensifies the volume of the carving.
The structure of the frame is solid and well proportioned, with reinforced corners and a molded profile that solemnly frames the interior space. The design responds to the courtly taste of the time, when the frames not only fulfilled a protective function, but were conceived as an ornamental extension of the pictorial work, integrating harmoniously into palatial or religious interiors.
These types of pieces reflect the expertise of the artisan workshops of the period, as well as the stylistic influence shared between France and Spain during the first third of the 18th century, in a context of intense artistic exchanges under the new Bourbon dynasty.
