DESCRIPTION
Mirror. Flanders, XIX century
Ebonized wood moldings, tortoiseshell veneer.
Original moon, with subtle mottling, typical of the passage of time.
Measurements: 110 x 80 x 4 cm.
Elegant wall mirror with molded profile frame, made of ebonized wood and covered with tortoiseshell veneer, which provides a characteristic mottled effect in warm reddish and black tones.
This type of piece is part of the Flemish decorative tradition, where the taste for rich materials and contrasting finishes was highly developed. The use of tortoiseshell -a luxury material derived from tortoiseshell- was common in marquetry and panelling during the 18th and 19th centuries, especially in objects for elegant interiors. The sobriety of the form, combined with the richness of the material, is a characteristic balance of the decorative production of the region.
