After a training in art and a period in avant-garde Paris, José Luis Zumeta settled in the Basque Country in 1960. There he began working with the sculptor Remigio Mendiburu and participated in his first group exhibition in San Sebastian. Between 1962 and 1963 he lived in Stockholm and London. In 1965 he participated in the founding of the Gaur group, together with Jorge Oteiza, Eduardo Chillida, Remigio Mendiburu, Nestor Basterretxea, Rafael Ruis Balerdi, Amable Arias and Sistiaga, a group that, in the midst of Franco's dictatorship, was born with the intention of recovering the dialogue and the relationship with the international avant-garde. Currently their works are present in important museums both in the Basque Country (Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao, Museo San Telmo de San Sebastián, Artium de Vitoria-Gasteiz) and abroad (Museo de la Concordia de Santiago de Chile).
