DESCRIPTION
French school of the 17th-18th century. MICHIEL CABBAEY (1666-1772).
"Christ."
Illuminated calligraphic print.
Signed.
Measurements: 12 x 9,5 cm; 17 x 14,5 x 2 cm (with frame).
Delicate devotional print, signed by Michiel Cabbaey, painter and engraver of Flemish origin active in France. The image, conceived within an oval composition, represents Christ, barely covered with the cloth of purity. The body is covered with red lines, which subtly allude to the sacrifice and physical pain of the Passion. Behind the figure, an idealized vision of Jerusalem unfolds, visible through robust, half-open doors, whose symbolism can be interpreted as a reference to the mystery of imprisonment and redemption. The scene is framed by a rich vegetal border of baroque inspiration, meticulously worked and illuminated by hand, which gives the whole a devotional character.
