Werner Berges was a fundamental figure of German Pop Art, who distinguished himself for his ability to reinterpret the iconography of mass culture and advertising under a prism of pictorial freshness. Trained at the design schools of Bremen and Berlin, he was co-founder of the Aspekt group and specialized in a representation of the female figure that oscillated between the seduction of graphic design and criticism of media objectification. His style, characterized by the use of dotted patterns, bands of vibrant colors and wide negative spaces, strips his models of individual features to turn them into iconic silhouettes of modernity. Throughout his career, Berges managed to fuse the rigor of engraving with the spontaneity of color, consolidating a body of work that today is preserved in prestigious institutions such as the Kunsthalle in Hamburg and the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin.
