The work represents a scene where Don Quixote lies sick in his bed, while his faithful friend Sancho Panza sits beside him, in pain. This engraving reaffirms Dalí's fascination with the great myths of Spanish culture and his ability to translate them into a visual language charged with psychological and poetic intensity.
In his early years, Salvador Dalí discovered contemporary painting in Cadaqués, where he met the family of the painter Ramón Pichot, who guided him towards his artistic training. He began to study with Juan Núñez and, in 1922, he entered the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid to train at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, from where he was expelled in 1926.
That same year he traveled to Paris for the first time and met Pablo Picasso, a decisive meeting for the consolidation of his artistic language. Soon he began to exhibit in Barcelona and Paris and joined the surrealist group of Montparnasse.
In 1934 he traveled to the United States with the support of the art dealer Julian Levy. After his first solo exhibition in New York, he achieved international recognition and developed an intense exhibition and lecturing activity around the world. A large part of his work is kept today in the Dalí Theatre-Museum, as well as in the Salvador Dalí Museum, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Espace Dalí and the Dalí Universe, among others.
