The composition presents a universe of hybrid and dynamic figures in an imaginary landscape, characteristic of Matta's surrealist language, combining organic forms, graphic gestures and an intense chromatic palette.
Roberto Matta was a key figure in international surrealism. He moved to Paris in 1937, where he came into contact with André Breton and the surrealist circle. He later settled in the United States, where his work influenced the development of abstract expressionism.
Throughout his career, Matta developed his own pictorial language based on mental spaces, biomorphic forms and imaginary universes. His work is preserved in important museums such as the MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Santiago, Chile.
