DESCRIPTION
EDUARDO CHILLIDA (San Sebastian, 1924 - 2002).
"Benedicto Alfaro Foundation".
Engraving, copy VI/L.
Signed and justified in pencil.
Measurements: 69,5 x 49 cm; 91 x 70 cm (frame).
This engraving by Eduardo Chillida clearly reflects the essential principles of his plastic language, based on the relationship between form, space and matter. The composition is articulated by means of a powerful contrast between black masses and white voids, where negative space acquires a structural role.
The geometric forms, simple in appearance but carefully balanced, generate an internal tension characteristic of Chillida's work, in which the boundary between full and empty becomes the true protagonist. The direct and emphatic treatment of the surface reinforces the architectural dimension of the image.
Eduardo Chillida was one of the most important Spanish sculptors of the 20th century and a key figure in international abstract sculpture. Throughout his life, he received numerous awards, including the Carnegie Prize, the Rembrandt Prize, the Wolf Foundation of the Arts Award and the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts. He was an academician of San Fernando, and member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Honorary of the Royal Academy of Arts of London and of the Imperial Order of Japan.
In addition to his Chillida-Leku Museum in Hernani, he is represented in museums and collections around the world, such as the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the MOMA in New York, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Tate Gallery in London or the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
