In her woodcuts, Marijose Recalde employs a highly expressive visual language based on the stark contrast between the black ink and the paper, and on an incisive line that retains the manual energy of the carving process. Her scenes, which appear to depict everyday life—domestic interiors, human figures, animals, or rural landscapes—take on a symbolic dimension thanks to formal simplification, the rhythm of the textures, and the graphic intensity of the composition. The artist transforms motifs linked to the countryside, the home, and simple life into images of almost mythical resonance, where the folk, the artisanal, and the narrative intertwine with a poetic gaze toward nature and objects. Her choice of media such as painted paper or materials with a strong tactile presence reinforces that relationship between memory, craftsmanship, and territory that runs through much of her work.
A sculptor, painter, printmaker, and draftsman, Marijose Recalde trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Pamplona and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of the Basque Country in 1990. She furthered her training in woodcut printmaking at the International Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Betanzos, at Bilbao Arte, and with Miguel Villariño in Almería. She has received various awards, including first prize in painting and sculpture at the Navarre Visual Arts Competition, first prize in sculpture at the Pamplona Young Artists Competition, and the Caja de España Sculpture Prize.
Notable among his solo exhibitions are those held at the Gustavo de Maeztu Museum, the Public University of Navarra, the Mixtos Gallery at the Pamplona Citadel, the Museum of Navarra, the Arteko Gallery in San Sebastián, the Gayarre Theater in Pamplona, and the Arenatzarte Sculpture Park, in Güeñes. He has participated in more than fifty group exhibitions. His work is represented in the Caja Navarra Collection, the Caja España Collection, the CIEC Foundation Collection, the Museum of Navarre, the Pamplona City Council, and Güeñes.
