Maestro José Padilla’s immortal score inspired three film adaptations that reflect the evolution of Spanish-language cinema. The first came during the silent era in 1927 as a co-production with Mexico, followed in 1933 by Ricardo de Baños’s sound version, which brought the music to theaters. Finally, in 1970, director Rafael Gil helmed the definitive full-color adaptation, cementing the bullfighting tragedy in the collective imagination thanks to the charisma and star power of Carmen Sevilla alongside Arturo Fernández.
*El Relicario* (1970) was one of the most notable Spanish productions of the final stage of Carmen Sevilla’s film career. Directed by Rafael Gil, the film combines drama, music, and romance in a story steeped in tradition. Carmen Sevilla starred in this film alongside a cast that included Arturo Fernández. The film reflects the cinematic style of 1970s Spain, with meticulous staging and musical elements that resonate with the artistic career of its lead actress.
