This is a composition that vividly captures the cosmopolitan bustle of a North African port at the end of the 18th century. The painting is a testimony to the growing European interest in the "Orient" (a concept that then covered from the Maghreb to the Levant), foreshadowing the rise of Orientalism in the 19th century.

The scene is articulated in several planes that guide the viewer's gaze from the anecdotal detail to the immensity of the landscape. In the foreground, the artist plunges us into the heart of the commercial activity. The serene monumentality of the camels contrasts with the human energy that surrounds them. Luxury and cultural diversity are manifested in the sumptuous details: the camels' saddles are a burst of color, with vermilion-red textiles and rich embroidery that speak of the wealth of their owners. The merchants, dressed in turbans and flowing pleated tunics, gesticulate and converse, immersed in the art of bargaining. A focal point of particular interest is the figure of the scribe. Seated among the goods - perhaps crates of dates, spices or exotic fruits - he leans over his papers with a pen in his hand.

The background reveals the port work in full swing. We observe the workers, anonymous figures loading and unloading bales, moving with the rhythmic energy of the docks. Finally, the background opens up to a horizon of great atmospheric depth. A ship waits with sails billowing in the breeze, ready to set sail or just anchored. The scene is framed by a sturdy port fortification, a symbol of the power and security needed to protect such a valuable enclave. Beyond, rock formations fade into a warm, golden haze, a haze that blurs the contours and gives the painting a dreamlike, timeless quality, characteristic of Mediterranean light.

The port animation, the exotic element and the warm golden light that bathes the work is a direct legacy of the French painters of the second half of the 18th century such as Jean Pillement, Claude Venert and Lacroix de Marseille.
