The present panel has its roots in Dutch painting. Among the favorite genres of the Dutch painters are the scenes of the rustic or country life, with village parties, taverns and scenes of shepherds. The citizens of Flanders greatly appreciated this type of painting, since they liked to see immortalized in the lives of humble people with the same richness of color, emotion and poetry as historical, religious or mythological subjects.
