DESCRIPTION
Spanish or Italian school of the XVIII century.
"Penitent Mary Magdalene".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 97 x 76 cm; 76 x 57 cm (frame).
The figure of Mary Magdalene appears with a red tunic, symbol of the passion and sin, slipped in a way that leaves a breast exposed: habitual resource in the baroque iconography to unite sensuality with repentance. The long, wavy hair falls over her shoulders, reinforcing the idea of earthliness but also of penitence (since, according to tradition, she wore it to cover her nudity). The idealized face, with soft and expressive features, corresponds to the aesthetic canon of the time, which sought to convey an ideal of spiritualized beauty through the physical form. The use of chiaroscuro emphasizes the dramatic tension: the body emerges with warm light on a dark background, highlighting the figure in an atmosphere of recollection. A skull (memento mori, symbol of the ephemerality of life) and symbols of the Passion are included in one corner, linking the saint's repentance with Christ's redemption.
Penitent Mary Magdalene was a recurring iconographic theme in Christian art, but it was in the Baroque period that the figure of the Magdalene gained great popularity in European painting, particularly during the Counter-Reformation.
