DESCRIPTION
After RAFAEL SANZIO (Urbino, 1483 - Rome, 1520), 17th century.
"Madonna of Bridgewater".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 77 x 60 cm.
Baroque copy of the famous "Madonna of Bridgewater" (ca. 1507), a painting that Raphael Sanzio originally painted on panel. It is preserved today in the National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh): the Renaissance master depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus in an atmosphere of intimate serenity.
The composition reflects Raphael's characteristic balance and grace: the Virgin appears with a tender and melancholic gesture, her face leaning towards the Child, who turns towards her with childlike naturalness. The soft light and delicate modeling accentuate the ideal harmony and spiritual purity of the scene.
Painted during the artist's Florentine period, Bridgewater's Madonna shows the perfect synthesis between his classical sense of beauty and the emotional humanity that defines his mature work.
