Remarkable representation of the Baroque period of the mystical encounter between the Child Jesus and St. John the Baptist child.

The body of the Child Jesus appears modeled with naturalism. He is partially covered by an intense red cloth, a color that acts as a visual punctum and symbolically prefigures his future Passion. His gesture is one of affection and divine authority, extending his hand to touch his cousin's chin as a sign of blessing or recognition.

St. Johnny is depicted in a posture of profound reverence. Kneeling, he devoutly gazes at Jesus. He wears his canonical iconographic attributes: the camel skin and a thin reed cross from which hangs a phylactery with the partially visible inscription "ECCE AGNUS DEI" ("Behold the Lamb of God"), which verbalizes his prophetic mission. In the lower corner, the presence of a lamb visually reinforces John's prophecy, identifying Jesus as the sacrificial lamb.

The technique is markedly tenebrist. A powerful diagonal spotlight, probably of divine origin, bathes the main figures, making them emerge from a deep darkness. This violent contrast is not merely aesthetic, but serves to model the volumes with sculptural solidity and to infuse the scene with an intense spiritual charge. The background is composed of a rugged, wooded landscape, the jungle or desert where St. John would spend his ascetic life. The gnarled trees and the twilight sky contribute to the solemn atmosphere.

The presence of an elderly, bearded man next to a woman adds a layer of solemnity to the secondary narrative. This is probably St. Joseph and the Virgin, an aspect that emphasizes the family's protection and observance of Jesus' divinity.
