This work is part of a pictorial tradition marked by spirituality, formal sobriety and continuity of baroque values. Its pictorial quality is manifested in the delicacy of the modeling, the softness of the flesh tones and the balanced use of color, where the blue and red tones of the Marian iconography stand out. The lighting is contained and directed, which reinforces the introspective character of the figure and focuses the viewer's attention on the serene and recollected expression of the Virgin.
The Spanish School of this period clearly differs from other contemporary European schools, such as the French or Italian, which evolved towards more dynamic, decorative and luminous compositions under the influence of the Rococo. On the other hand, Spanish painting maintains an austere aesthetic and a strong religious charge, inherited from the Counter-Reformation, where the main function of the image is contemplation and devotion. These differences are reflected in the dark and poorly defined background, the balanced composition and the absence of excessive ornamental elements, as well as in the representation of the angels, who appear in a secondary and discreet way.
