In seventeenth-century Spain, the still life was consolidated as a genre of great artistic relevance, reaching its own identity within the context of the Golden Age. Painters focused on the representation of everyday objects -fruits, vegetables, bread, clay, earthenware or metal vessels, as well as birds and game- arranged in a sober and carefully balanced composition. These scenes were usually set against neutral and dark backgrounds, where an intense and directed light highlighted the shapes and textures, giving the objects an almost sculptural presence. The interest lay not only in the meticulous realism, but also in the symbolic charge of the elements represented, which alluded to the transience of life, austerity, spirituality and the passing of time. In this way, the Spanish still life of the 17th century transformed the humble and the everyday into a painting of great expressive depth, characterized by silence, restraint and visual intensity.
