"The vision of San Francisco de Paula".

The painting in tender is directly based on the "Vision of San Francisco de Paula" by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (ca. 1670), from which it takes the physical type of the saint, the ecstatic expression and the ascending gesture of the gaze. Unlike the Baroque model, which includes the heavenly apparition with cherubs and the luminous radiance, this nineteenth-century version suppresses the angels and reduces the scene to the isolated figure of the saint, transforming the supernatural vision into an interior and silent experience. The result is a more sober and intimate composition, where the mystical emotion is transmitted through the light, the chiaroscuro and the contemplative attitude, in accordance with the devotional taste of the 19th century and the Murillo legacy reinterpreted from a later sensibility.
