DESCRIPTION

Follower of FRANCISCO DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES (Zaragoza, 1746 - Bordeaux, 1828); End of the XIX century.
"The Count of Fernán Núñez.
Oil on canvas.
Signed Lucas.
Measurements: 29 x 23 cm; 38 x 31.5 cm (frame).
In this portrait, which follows the portrait model found in the collection of the Palace of Fernán Núñez, the count is represented bust-length although the original is presented full-length, standing in the center of an open landscape, dressed in clothing of popular inspiration: dark cloak, wide-brimmed hat and high boots. The predominance of black in his clothing establishes a marked contrast with the luminous white of the shirt, closed up to the neck, as well as with the pallor of his face, slightly turned to the left, which reinforces the sensation of distinction and refinement. His energetic features, framed by thick sideburns, convey a combination of closeness and firmness, while the inclination of his head suggests a confident, almost haughty attitude.
Don Carlos Gutiérrez de los Ríos, seventh Count of Fernán Núñez was born in Lisbon in 1779, into a prominent noble family. He was the son of the sixth count of the same title and María de la Esclavitud Sarmiento de Sotomayor. He married María de la Soledad Vicenta Solís Lasso, who was also portrayed by Francisco de Goya in a painting conceived as a pendant to her husband's portrait. Throughout his life he developed a brilliant diplomatic career, representing the Spanish monarchy in key scenarios of European politics, such as the Congress of Vienna, as well as in the courts of London and Paris. His expertise and prestige in this field led King Ferdinand VII to grant in 1817 the elevation of his county to the rank of duchy. At the same time, he was named honorary academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He died prematurely in 1822.
