DESCRIPTION

Italian school; XVIII century.
"Jesus among the doctors".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 183 x 70 cm; 113 x 81 cm (frame).
This scene of Jesus among the doctors is inscribed in the Italian pictorial tradition of the XVIII century, heir of the great baroque legacy and open to a clearer, scenographic and narrative language. The episode, taken from the Gospel of St. Luke, relates the moment when the young Jesus, in the Temple of Jerusalem, dialogues with the wise men and doctors of the Law, astonishing them by the depth of his knowledge. The composition is articulated around the central figure of the child Christ, whose serenity contrasts with the dynamism and expressive variety of the doctors who surround him. The eloquent gestures, the crossed glances and the attitudes of surprise or reflection generate a rich theatrical play, characteristic of the Italian sensibility of the 18th century.
From the formal point of view, the work reflects the evolution of the Baroque towards more luminous and elegant formulas. The light, more open and enveloping than in the previous century, models the figures with softness and creates a plausible architectural space, inspired by classical grandeur. The brushstroke alternates areas of greater definition with looser passages in canvases and backgrounds, bringing vitality to the whole. The chromatic richness, with intense reds, deep blues and warm ochers, contributes to hierarchize the scene and to emphasize the centrality of Christ. The theme has a strong symbolic charge: it anticipates the public mission of Jesus and affirms his dual human and divine nature. In the Italian cultural context of the eighteenth century, marked by the continuity of the Catholic tradition and academic refinement.
