DESCRIPTION

Italian School; PIETRO BIANCHI (Rome, 1694–1740); 18th century.
“St. John the Baptist.”

This work depicts Saint John the Baptist in his traditional iconography as the forerunner of Christ, identified by the reed cross with a phylactery bearing the inscription “Agnus Dei,” a direct allusion to his messianic proclamation. The figure appears in a wooded landscape, with a sky of soft hues and natural surroundings that frame the saint in a serene and contemplative pose. He wears the characteristic skin-tight garment across his torso and is draped in a wide red cloak that, arranged in broad, dynamic folds, introduces an intense chromatic accent and structures the composition.
The saint’s anatomy, with its soft modeling and gradual transitions of light, reveals a solid academic foundation, while the work moves away from tenebrist drama to align with a late-Baroque classical sensibility. The compositional balance, the moderately foreshortened pose, and the interplay between figure and landscape reflect the principles of 18th-century Roman Baroque, where the legacy of Bolognese Classicism and the Roman decorative tradition converge in a synthesis of grace and formal clarity.
Pietro Bianchi, born in Rome to Genoese parents, trained under prominent masters of the Roman Baroque such as Giovanni Battista Gaulli, Giuseppe Ghezzi, and Benedetto Luti. This diverse training explains the combination, evident in the work, of the decorative tradition rooted in Gaulli’s style, the academic rigor of the drawing, and a chromatic delicacy inherited from Luti. Although few in number, Bianchi’s surviving works—including a ceiling in the Colonna Palace in Rome and several altarpieces—attest to his place in the Roman artistic circles of his time.
Drawings by him are also known, such as those created in 1713 for the Clementine competition on the theme of a miracle of St. Pius V, which reveal a marked classical rigor. Sources mention his collaboration through designs for sculptors such as Della Valle, Bracci, and Maini, although no identified examples have survived. His work as a landscape painter is equally noteworthy, a practice he cultivated through studies from life made during his walks in the Roman countryside—a practice that connects with the tradition of the ideal landscape and was particularly well-received by English travelers on the Grand Tour.
In this Saint John the Baptist, the harmonious integration of the sacred figure and the natural setting highlights this dual aspect of his work: devotional painting with academic roots and a landscape sensibility rooted in direct observation. The work thus belongs to the 18th-century Italian School, within the late Roman Baroque, characterized by compositional elegance, expressive restraint, and the continuation of classical ideals in a fully 18th-century context.
