This painting is inscribed in the tradition of the classic French portrait, heir of models spread in the environment of Hyacinthe Rigaud or Nicolas de Largillière, and constitutes an attractive testimony of the representation of the power and the identity in the France of the beginning of the XVIII century.
The character is depicted half-length, dressed in the clothing appropriate to his condition: powdered wig, black robe and fine white lace on the collar and cuffs, elements that underline his belonging to the judicial or administrative sphere. The pose, sober and restrained, conveys dignity and authority, while the slight inclination of the face and the direct gaze provide a subtle psychological individualization.
