The painting belongs to the civilian portrait of half body, a modality particularly diffused in the pre-revolutionary and Napoleonic France. The figure is presented with an elegant sobriety: the personage turns his body slightly while directing his gaze towards the viewer, establishing a direct and restrained relationship that gives psychological vitality to the composition. This disposition responds to the principles of French illustrated portraiture, interested less in baroque theatricality than in the representation of the model's individuality and moral character.
The relationship with Boilly's circle is particularly significant. Louis-Léopold Boilly was one of the great visual chroniclers of Parisian society, famous for his portraits and genre scenes in which he minutely observed the gestures, fashions and customs of bourgeois life. In this work we can clearly perceive this stylistic heritage: the precise treatment of the face, the sharpness of the drawing and the almost tactile attention to the textile qualities reveal a sensibility close to the realism characteristic of the painter and his artistic environment. The sitter does not appear idealized in a heroic manner; on the contrary, his serene and somewhat introspective expression conveys a concrete and recognizable humanity.
Formally, the work reveals a solid academic background. The neutral, dark background concentrates attention on the figure and allows the luminosity of the face to stand out through a delicate modeling of light and shadow. The brushstroke is restrained and precise, subordinate to the clarity of the drawing, a typical feature of the French tradition.
