This painting depicts one of the most celebrated episodes from *Il Pastor Fido* (*The Faithful Shepherd*), the famous pastoral tragicomedy written by Giovanni Battista Guarini in the late 16th century—a work that enjoyed extraordinary popularity in European literature, music, and the visual arts for more than two centuries. The scene depicts the moment immediately following the accident that transforms the fate of its protagonists: the shepherdess Dorinda, in love with the young hunter Silvio, has been accidentally wounded by an arrow he shot during a hunting trip. This event marks the beginning of Silvio’s emotional transformation; until then indifferent to love, he eventually falls in love with the young woman he has wounded.
The painting captures the moment of peak tension with remarkable sensitivity. Dorinda is shown slumped against a rock, her body limp and her face raised in an expression of restrained pain. The wound, discreetly visible through her clothing, avoids any excessive drama and focuses attention on the emotional dimension of the scene. Facing her, Silvio kneels in a gesture of anguish and remorse, reaching out his hand toward the young woman in a pose that foreshadows the compassion and love that will emerge after the accident. The landscape plays a fundamental role in the composition. Far from being a mere decorative backdrop, it recreates the idealized world of Arcadia, a common setting in pastoral literature.
The work belongs to the Italian pictorial tradition of the second third of the 18th century, when paintings with pastoral and mythological themes enjoyed great popularity among European elites. The delicate color palette, the luminosity of the atmosphere, and the softness of the forms reveal a sensibility far removed from the intense hallmarks of the preceding Baroque period. The composition emphasizes narrative grace and decorative refinement, qualities that characterize much of Italian Rococo art.
