DESCRIPTION

Lombard master; possibly from the PROCACCINI family, first half of the 17th century.
“The Assumption of Mary Magdalene.”
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 235 x 99 cm.
This work reflects the influence exerted by the important artistic circle of the Procaccini family, a leading force in the pictorial renewal that took place in Milan during the early decades of the 17th century. The subject, dedicated to the exaltation of the Virgin Mary’s purity, took on extraordinary significance in the context of the Counter-Reformation, when sacred art became a fundamental tool for the doctrinal affirmation of the Catholic Church and for the strengthening of popular devotion.

The composition is structured around a vertical, ascending scheme that draws the viewer’s gaze toward the central figure of the Virgin. Mary appears surrounded by a multitude of angels and cherubs whose movements generate a sense of continuous dynamism, creating a celestial atmosphere that underscores the supernatural nature of the scene. The arrangement of the figures and the rhythm of the forms help reinforce the idea of spiritual elevation, one of the main objectives of religious painting of the period.

From a stylistic perspective, the work displays characteristics typical of the Lombard school of the early Baroque period. The figures display a softness of modeling and an expressive delicacy that hark back to the late Mannerist tradition, while the chromatic richness, the fluidity of the folds, and the emotional intensity foreshadow the new Baroque sensibilities. The idealized faces of the angels and the elegance of the forms reveal affinities with the artistic language developed by members of the Procaccini family, particularly in their ability to combine grace, movement, and religious fervor.

The iconography follows the traditional model of the Immaculate Conception. The Virgin is depicted in a prayerful pose, her gaze raised toward the divine, symbolizing purity, humility, and obedience. The presence of the angels and the radiance enveloping the scene reinforce the glorious nature of the depiction, conceived to inspire both spiritual contemplation and devotional emotion in the faithful.

Lombard painting of the first half of the 17th century occupied a unique position within the Italian artistic landscape by integrating the elegance inherited from Mannerism with a growing emotional and narrative sensibility. In this context, the Procaccini workshop and circle played a decisive role in defining a refined and deeply religious visual language. This work is fully part of that tradition, standing out for the harmony of its composition, the delicacy of its figures, and the spiritual intensity that emanates from the scene.
