DESCRIPTION

From the circle of DANIEL SEGHERS (Antwerp, 1590–1661).
“Flower Wreath with the Virgin and Child.”
Oil on canvas. Relined at the edges.
Measurements: 108 x 87 cm; 130.5 x 109.5 cm (frame).
This painting belongs to one of the most characteristic and popular genres of Baroque painting in the Southern Netherlands. These compositions, which combine devotional imagery with exuberant floral elements, flourished in Antwerp thanks to the influence of artists specializing in flower painting, among whom Daniel Seghers stood out as one of the leading figures of this genre. The composition is organized around a central image of the Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus. Both figures are framed by an oval surrounded by a rich floral garland composed of numerous carefully rendered species. This device creates an effect of solemnity and contemplation, while establishing a symbolic separation between the earthly realm and the sacred realm occupied by the religious figures.
From a stylistic perspective, the work reflects the characteristics typical of Seghers’ artistic milieu. The extraordinary precision in the botanical depiction, the delicacy of the colors, and the meticulous rendering of textures reveal an interest in the direct observation of nature. Each flower is rendered with great care, displaying remarkable technical skill and a decorative sensibility that are hallmarks of 17th-century Flemish painting.
Daniel Seghers, a Jesuit and painter specializing in floral garlands, played a fundamental role in the consolidation of this genre in Antwerp. His compositions, often created in collaboration with other artists responsible for the central figures, enjoyed great prestige among collectors, religious institutions, and European courts. The influence of his style gave rise to numerous works produced by followers and artists in his circle, who continued to develop this refined visual language.
