A descendant of one of Flanders’ most distinguished artistic dynasties, David Teniers III was the son of David Teniers II and, on his mother’s side, a grandson of the Brueghel family. His training, which likely took place in his father’s studio, allowed him to assimilate both the refined elegance of portraiture found in artists such as Anton van Dyck and Gonzales Coques and a taste for popular and rural scenes inherited from his predecessors.
In this composition, the figures blend naturally into the landscape, creating a dynamic and balanced scene.
