The work reflects the devotional naturalism that characterized much of Spanish religious painting during the Baroque period. The figure of Christ, isolated against a background almost entirely shrouded in shadow, is the focal point of the composition. The lighting falls selectively on the torso, the cloth of purity, and the legs, emphasizing the anatomy and the signs of the Passion without resorting to excessively dramatic gestures.
The body is depicted as already overcome by death, with the head bowed and the arms outstretched in a pronounced diagonal. The white of the perizonium provides the main chromatic hallmark and reinforces the figure’s sculptural presence. At the bottom, an urban view evokes Jerusalem and symbolically situates the episode on Mount Calvary. The plant elements arranged at the foot of the cross provide a counterpoint of life and hope to the sacrificial nature of the scene.
The pronounced chiaroscuro, the restrained color palette, and the narrative focus link the painting to the Spanish tenebrist tradition, which aims to foster an intimate and emotional contemplation. Its vertical format and the absence of secondary figures make Christ’s body the sole visual and spiritual focal point of the composition.
