DESCRIPTION

Seville School, 17th century.
“Saint John.”
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 26 x 21 cm; 39 x 34 cm (frame).
The depiction of the severed head of Saint John the Baptist was one of the most widespread motifs in Baroque iconography and a favorite subject of 17th-century Sevillian painting, where naturalism and spirituality reached one of their most refined expressions. In this work, the artist recreates with remarkable sensitivity the moment following the martyrdom of the Precursor, offering an image of profound devotional intensity in which silence and solemnity prevail over any dramatic depiction.
The saint’s head rests on a metal tray, an iconographic element inseparable from the Gospel account that recounts how Salome presented the trophy of the execution ordered by Herod Antipas. The inclusion of this tray not only unequivocally identifies the figure but also introduces a liturgical and ceremonial dimension characteristic of the visual language of the Counter-Reformation, transforming the object into a symbol of sacrifice accepted with humility and fidelity.
The artist focuses all attention on the youthful face of John the Baptist, rendered with extraordinary delicacy. His closed eyes, serene features, and the gentle tilt of his head convey a sense of contemplation that transcends the historical episode to become an image of spiritual contemplation. The rendering of the hair, with its fluid and vibrant brushstrokes, as well as the careful modulation of the skin tones, reveal an experienced hand fully versed in the technical resources developed by the Sevillian School at the height of its maturity.
