DESCRIPTION

A follower of LUIS DE MORALES, EL DIVINO (Badajoz, ca. 1510–1586).
“Pietà.”
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 64 x 47 cm; 77 x 63 cm (frame).
The Virgin Mary, with a restrained and deeply human expression, bows her head over the lifeless body of her Son as she gently cradles him. The composition, with its great sense of balance, guides the viewer’s gaze from the cross—situated in the background as a reminder—to the figure of the Virgin and, finally, to the body of Christ, placed in the foreground and becoming the true focal point of devotion in the scene. The choice of a palette of cool, muted tones reinforces the atmosphere of contemplation and meditation, while the lighting models the figures with a delicacy that accentuates the restrained pathos, steering clear of any dramatic excess.
The work bears close affinities with the oeuvre of Luis de Morales, known since the 17th century as “El Divino,” one of the most distinctive painters of the Spanish Renaissance. His paintings, intended primarily for private devotion, are characterized by a refined sense of detail, delicate modeling, and an intense spiritual charge that transforms his figures into true vehicles of meditation. Trained in an environment where Flemish and Italian traditions converged, Morales developed a deeply personal style, recognizable by the softness of the sfumato, the elegance of the skin tones, and the melancholic expression of his figures, immersed in an atmosphere of introspection and religious fervor.
Between 1550 and 1570, he reached the peak of his career, producing numerous paintings for churches, monasteries, and private clients—works that enjoyed extraordinary popularity in 16th-century Spain. The enormous demand for his compositions fueled the activity of a major workshop, a circumstance that explains the existence of multiple versions and replicas of his most celebrated works. This painting is fully immersed in the aesthetic and devotional world that made Luis de Morales one of the great interpreters of Spanish religious sensibility, offering an image of extraordinary spiritual intensity and undeniable appeal to collectors of old master paintings.
