The work depicts one of the most significant episodes in Franciscan hagiography: the vision of St. Francis of Assisi on Mount La Verna. According to tradition, the saint beheld the apparition of a crucified seraph with six wings. As a sign of this supernatural experience, the stigmata of Christ were imprinted on his own body, making him the first stigmatized saint in the history of the Church. The iconography of St. Francis’s Vision on Mount Alvernia was widely disseminated by the great Italian masters of the 17th century, becoming one of the favorite themes of Baroque religious painting. This work is a remarkable example of this tradition, combining a solid compositional structure with a pronounced mystical sentiment
The painting fully embodies the principles of the 17th-century Italian school, characterized by the language of the Baroque and a renewed ability to move the viewer through emotional intensity. The composition, designed to exalt the culminating moment of the mystical vision, assigns a central role to the interplay of light and shadow—a device that accentuates the supernatural nature of the apparition and directs the viewer’s gaze toward the central figure. The naturalism in the depiction of the saint, the expressiveness of his gestures, and the atmosphere of contemplation reveal the influence of the spirituality that emerged after the Counter-Reformation, which found in this type of image an effective vehicle for contemplation and devotion. Seventeenth-century Italian painting was marked by the full maturity of the Baroque, an artistic language characterized by narrative intensity, naturalism, and a studied theatricality in the service of religious emotion. The influence of masters such as Caravaggio, the Carracci, Guido Reni, and Guercino gave rise to highly balanced compositions, in which the treatment of light, the monumentality of the figures, and the richness of color all contributed to reinforcing the spiritual content of the scenes.
