In this scene of historical subject a well-known episode of the Uprising of May 2, 1808 is represented, which took place in Madrid before the French invasion of Spain. Luis Daoíz and Pedro Velarde, leading the insurrection, shut themselves and their people in the Parque de Monteleón and repelled the waves of troops sent by General Lefranc. However, they were eventually defeated by the large number of reinforcements sent. The tragic moment of the death of the two captains is depicted here.
A painter, draughtsman, watercolourist and lithographer, Eduard Roig was the brother of Lluis Roig Enseñat, with whom he set up a lithographic workshop. They were both members of the Agrupación de Acuarelistas de Cataluña (Association of Watercolourists of Catalonia) and often exhibited together in Barcelona.
