In a sea roughened by a strong breeze, two boats of considerable size and hull of wood carved with sumptuous decoration, show in their masts flags of the Netherlands. Although executed in the nineteenth century, this painting of a naval theme seems to evoke a seventeenth-century setting, as the heeling fleets belong to that period. It was a time of numerous naval conflicts on the coasts of Flanders, especially because of its confrontation with England. It is worth noting the precise capture of the rhythmic, lilting and foaming waves, the transparencies and veils of the iridescent water, as well as the limpid sky and the depiction of the swaying of the ships in an agitated sea.
